Klungkung is the smallest regency from the whole 8 that formed up the province of Bali. One third of the of Klungkung regency lies in island of Bali and two third consists of three island namely; Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan which are located beyond the island of Bali. So altogether the territory of Klungkung occupies land area of 31.510 square kilometer and it now has population of 417.772.
In the days of empire, Klungkung was the center of governmental kingdom of Bali. King of Klungkung is the direct heir and descendant of a dynasty Krishna Kepakisan. Therefore, Klungkung history is closely linked to the kings who ruled in Samprangan and Gelgel.
During the reign of Dynasty Kepakisan in Bali, it had happened twice a displacement of the center of the kingdom (1350-1908). First was from Samprangan to Gelgel which took place peacefully in the 14th century with the ruling kings Dalem Ketut Ngulesir, Dalem Waturenggong, Dalem Bekung, Dalem Segening, and Dalem Dimade.
Secondly the center of the kingdom moved from Gelgel – Swecapura to the center of kingdom Klungkung Semarapura 1720 with the kings of Raja Dewa Agung Jambe, Dewa Agung Made, Dewa Agung in Madya, Sri Agung Sakti, Sri Agung Putra Kusamba, and Dewa Agung Istri Kania.
Though Klungkung underwent a lot of history on its past, even reach the glorious era being regarded as the kingdom of Bali, there is not much left to see of its past time due to the war and the colonization of the Dutch in the beginning of 20th century which has destroyed most of its kingdom palaces.
Today the most visited tourist place in Klungkung is the Kerta Gosa the remains of court of justice of the former kingdom of klungkung which is usually included in the tour to Besakih. The village of Kamasan is used for the name of painting style in Bali because it develops special kind of traditional painting that differ from other styles and mostly used for painting temple’s decorations. And the village of Tihingan known as the place where the Balinese traditional musical instruments made of metal still on the make.
