    Geography

    Lombok Strait marks the boundary of flora and fauna of Asia. Starting from the island of Lombok to the east, flora and fauna more showed similarities with the flora and fauna found in Australia than Asia. Scientists who first stated this is Alfred Russel Wallace, a British in the 19th century. To honor this limit is called the Wallace Line.
    Topography of the island is dominated by Rinjani volcano which reaches a height of 3726 meters above sea level and making it the third highest in Indonesia. The mountain last erupted in June-July 1994. In 1997 the mountain region and adjoining lake Segara Anak otherwise protected by the government. Areas south of the island is largely composed of fertile land used for agriculture, commodities are usually planted in this area such as corn, rice, coffee, tobacco and cotton.
    Demography
    Approximately 80% of the population of this island is the Sasak tribe, a tribe that is still close to Bali tribe, but most converted to Islam. The rest of the population is Balinese, Javanese, Chinese and Arabic.

     

    Besides Indonesian as the national language, the population of the island of Lombok (especially Sasak), using the Sasak language as the main language in everyday conversation. Lombok itself throughout the Sasak language can be found in four different dialects the dialect Lombok northern, central, northeast and southeast. In addition to the number of tribal people living in Lombok Bali (mostly from the former kingdom of Karangasem), in some places, particularly in West Lombok and Mataram municipality can be found villages that use Balinese language as the language of daily conversation.

    Religion

    Most of the inhabitants of the island of Lombok, especially Sasak embraced Islam. Second largest religion practiced on the island is Hinduism, which is embraced by the Bali descendant population, amounting to around 15% of the entire population. Christians, Buddhists and other religions can also be found, and especially embraced by migrants from different tribes and ethnic groups who live on this island. Largest religious organization in Lombok is Nahdlatul Wathan (NW), the organization also established many Islamic educational institutions of different levels from the lowest level to higher education.

     

    In North Lombok, precisely in the area Bayan, especially among the elderly, can be found the adherents of Islam Wetu telu (three). Unlike most adherents of Islam who pray five times a day, the adherents of this teaching practice obligatory prayers only at three time.

    History

    According to the contents Babad Lombok, the oldest kingdom that once ruled the island is called the Kingdom of LAeq (in sasak LAeq mean the past), but other sources the Chronicle Suwung, stating that the oldest kingdom in Lombok is the kingdom Suwung built and led by King Betara senses. Suwung kingdom then subsided and was replaced by the Kingdom of Lombok. In the 9th century until the 11th century stand Sasak kingdom was defeated by one of the kingdom from Bali at that time.     Selaparang kingdom itself appears in two periods ie in the 13th century and the 16th century. The first Selaparang kingdom is the kingdom of Hindu and power ended with the coming of the kingdom of Majapahit expedition in the year 1357. The second Selaparang kingdom is the kingdom of Islam and power ended in 1744 after defeated by the combined forces of Bali’s Karangasem kingdom and Arya Banjar Getas which is the royal family of betraying Selaparang because of problems with the king Selaparang. This led occupation Bali Bali a strong cultural influence on the western side of Lombok, as in dance and heritage buildings (e.g. Cakranegara Palace in Ampenan).     Tourism

    Lombok in many ways similar to Bali, and in the decade of the 1990s began to be known by foreign tourists.
